1. Dance, Dance, Dance!

“Few activities stimulate as wide a variety of brain systems as dancing does,” says Daniel Amen, M.D., author of Magnificent Mind at Any Age. “Dancing requires everything from coordination and organization to planning and judgment.” Ditto for martial arts. “Both require you to position different parts of your body simultaneously and in synchronicity—and with dance, you’ve got to move along to music,” says John Ratey, M.D., author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. “That’s a lot of mental stimulation.”

2. Visit the Gym

According to a 2007 Columbia University study, working out at the gym may help you sprout new cells in the dentate gyrus, an area of the brain vital to memory. Researchers measured blood volume in the brains of adults who worked out four times a week for four months and found that all that activity sparks the production of more neurons

3. Crack Some Eggs

The ideal breakfast is an egg, according to Larry McCleary, M.D., author of The Brain Trust Program. The incredible edible contains B vitamins, which enable nerve cells to burn glucose, your brain’s major energy source; antioxidants, which protect neurons against damage; and omega-3 fatty acids, which keep nerve cells firing at optimal speed. Similarly, McCleary says that the best brain foods are those that would rot if the power went out. Pick fresh fruits, veggies, and lean proteins and avoid the dreaded duo, trans fats (“they diminish brain cells’ ability to communicate with each other”) and high-fructose corn syrup (“it can shrink the brain by damaging cells”).

4. Keep on Moving On

Multitasking is like Kryptonite to gray matter. When you have a crammed to-do list, rather than layer projects, take on one task at a time and change them up every hour. Can’t finish something in 60 minutes? Schedule another slot for it later in the day. “Switching from one project to the next will engage different areas of the brain, keeping you mentally alert,” says Gary Small, M.D., director of the UCLA Center on Aging and the Semel Institute Memory Research Center and the author of The Longevity Bible.

5. Hydrate Your Mind

In a 2006 University of South Florida study, people who drank three or more 4-ounce glasses of fruit or vegetable juice each week were 76 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who drank less. The high levels of polyphenols—antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables—may protect brain cells from the damage that may be caused by the disease, says study author Amy Borenstein, Ph.D. Eight six-ounce glasses of water a day will do you good, too. “Your brain is 80 percent water, and if it’s not hydrated, your neurons can’t perform properly,” says Dr. Amen.

6. Take a YouTube Timeout

You can counteract stress—and roll back psychological aging—with laughter. Even the anticipation of a good laugh decreases the stress chemicals cortisol and epinephrine by 39 percent and 70 percent, respectively, say researchers at Loma Linda University. Laughter is also great for the heart. When participants in a University of Maryland study watched stressful film clips, they experienced vasoconstriction—a narrowing of the blood vessels—while the blood vessels of those watching funny films expanded by 22 percent.

7. Hit the Hay

Getting plenty of snooze time is key to keeping your head on its toes. According to a 2007 study at Harvard Medical School, z’s help memories lodge themselves in your brain (as anyone who has ever pulled an all-nighter and then tried to recall important details can attest). The study showed that the brain gathers disparate pieces of information and weaves them into a coherent whole while you’re asleep. Clock seven hours of shuteye, recommends Dr. Amen. “Science shows that people who sleep for seven hours exhibit significantly more brain activity than those who don’t,” he says.

8. Disconnect the cable

A 2005 study published in Brain and Cognition found that for each additional hour per day a person spent watching TV between the ages of 40 and 59, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s later in life rose by 1.3 percent. Top out at two hours a day, recommends Aric Sigman, Ph.D., psychologist, biologist, and author of Remotely Controlled: How Television Is Damaging Our Lives, and consider joining a reading group. “Reading is good for your brain only when it involves storing and retrieving information,” says Dr. Amen. “And the social aspect of book groups adds another dynamic that bolsters cognitive functioning.”

9. Raid the Spice Rack

Sprinkle some rosemary on your entrées and side dishes. The carnosic acid found in this spice has been shown to reduce stroke risk in mice by 40 percent, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurochemistry. Carnosic acid appears to set off a process that shields brain cells from free-radical damage, which can worsen the effects of a stroke. It can also protect against degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and the general effects of aging. But rosemary is not the only “mind spice” on the shelf: Cinnamon, turmeric, basil, oregano, thyme, and sage can all protect your brain from inflammation, says neurologist Eric Braverman, M.D., a clinical assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. Shoot for 3 to 7 teaspoons of any combination of these spices each day. “Add a teaspoon of cinnamon to your morning yogurt or coffee,” says Dr. Braverman. “Sprinkle basil and oregano on a sandwich, or stir a teaspoon of rosemary into tea. It’ll add up.”

10. Study Another Language

Parlez-vous français? Non? Then you may find yourself less able to stave off dementia when you’re older. In a 2007 study at York University in Toronto, bilingual seniors kept the worst effects of the condition at bay four years longer than those who’d never ventured beyond their native tongue. Learning a second language appears to increase the density of gray matter in the areas of your brain that govern attention and memory, says researcher Ellen Bialystok, Ph.D. During your commute, play some language-instruction CDs, such as the ones from Macmillan’s Behind the Wheel series.

11. Floss Your Teeth

Inflamed, bloody gums can signify bodywide wellness issues. Not only do unhealthy mouths unleash bacteria into the bloodstream, where the bugs can travel to vital organs, but people with gum disease also have worse mental functioning than those whose gums are healthy, according to a U.K. study of more than 6,500 adults.

12. Go Green

Drinking five or more cups of green tea per day can make you 20 percent less likely to experience psychological distress than if you drink less than a cup, according to a new study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

GIRLS? You may not even realize all the messages your body language sends to a guy — before you even speak to him. Read our quick guide to body language signals, and next time you spot a cute guy, you’ll know exactly how to say “Hello, there” without uttering a single word.

1. Smiling coyly
“If you smile subtly — without showing your teeth — while your eyes are slightly narrowed, you’re telling a guy that you want to get to know him better,” James says. This signal is best used when you first meet someone.
2. Catching his eye and holding it for a couple of seconds
This is the most powerful weapon in your body-language-flirting arsenal, says Judi James, author of “The Body Language Rules: A Savvy Guide to Understanding Who’s Flirting, Who’s Faking, and Who’s Really Interested.” “If you hold his gaze for just a half second longer than the usual split-second gaze, and then you look down and back at him, it tells the guy that you’ve considered him and you like what you see,” James says. Try this move in a crowded bar or at a party.
3. Fixing your hair or your outfit
We do this when we’re aware that we’re being watched and we want to make sure we look our best, James says. Grooming gestures like these let him know that you’ve noticed he has checked you out.
4. Brushing his arm
This is a boundary-testing touch. “Men see this as the first gesture to physical intimacy,” James says. “You are inviting him to reciprocate and touch you in a similar way.”
5. Interacting with other people
Playing with a friend’s hair or touching a friend’s arm while you talk to him acts as a representation of how you touch. “These gestures tell a man that either he can be the recipient of your touching or he could be the one touching you in that way,” James says.
6. Looking away as you kiss, hug, or greet him
If you look around the room, at the door, or even at another guy when you say hello to a man, it tells him that you’re not that into him, says James. “You may even be on the lookout for someone else,” she adds.
7. Mimicking his movements
“Making subtle tweaks to mirror his movements shows him that you two are on the same page,” says James. Mirroring his movements may sound awkward or too obvious, but something as subtle as holding your drink at the same height as his is all it takes.
8. Folding your arms
“Classically, people see this is a barrier gesture that repels people,” James says. There are two different versions, each with its own meaning. “If your arms are folded in a self-hug, so that your hands touch your rib cage, it can imply that you’re feeling insecure or bored,” she says. “If your arms are folded so that your hands are on your biceps, you’re telling him that you’re not interested in talking.”
9. Making steady eye contact when he’s talking
“Giving him 100-percent eye contact when he’s talking, while also nodding to show that you’re listening, tells him that you value what he has to say,” James says. But you should look away briefly when you’re talking. “Too much prolonged eye contact when you speak can look intimidating or even dishonest.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Privacy advocates slammed revamped Facebook privacy controls on Thursday, saying the change masks a move to get members to expose more information online.

“These new privacy changes aren’t so great for privacy,” said Nicole Ozer, northern California technology and civil liberties policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) rights group.

“It’s great that 350 million people are being asked to think about privacy, but if what Facebook says is true about giving people more control over their information, they have a lot more work to do.”

Online rights organization Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) labeled aspects of Facebook’s privacy change “downright ugly.”

The world’s leading online social network fired back, saying its critics are wrong and that time will prove that Facebook is taking “a giant step forward.”

The controversy came a day after Facebook began requiring users to refine settings with a new software tool that lets them specify who gets to be privy to each piece of content uploaded to the website.

The controversy came a day after Facebook began requiring users to refine settings with a new software tool that lets them specify who gets to be privy to each piece of content uploaded to the website.

While the Facebook privacy overhaul has laudable features, there is a push to get the online community’s members to expose information, according to EFF.

“Facebook’s new changes are obviously intended to get people to open up even more of their Facebook data to the public,” EFF lawyer Kevin Bankston said in a blog post.

“The Facebook privacy transition tool is clearly designed to push users to share much more of their Facebook info with everyone, a worrisome development that will likely cause a major shift in privacy level for most of Facebook’s users, whether intentionally or inadvertently.”

Prior to the change, Facebook users could keep everything but their names and networks private.

A newly created “public” category at Facebook now includes names, profile pictures, home cities, pages users have joined as “fans,” gender and friend lists.

“There is a whole lot more information that users have no ability to keep private,” Ozer noted.

Software that walks people through modifying privacy settings recommends making more personal information public and doesn’t allow stricter settings than were previously in place, according to the ACLU.

“If users aren’t careful, the transition tool will transition them to less privacy,” Ozer said.

The privacy change doesn’t address the ability of third-party applications installed in Facebook profiles to mine data from the social network, according to the ACLU.

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle,
When 24 hours in a day is not enough;
Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class
And had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And start to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
It into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again
If the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand
And poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded
With an unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table
And poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
Filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.

‘Now,’ said the professor, as the laughter subsided,
‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things – God, family,
Children, health, friends, and favorite passions
Things that if everything else was lost
And only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else –
The small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued,
‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are
Important to you.

So…

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.

There will always be time
To clean the house and fix the dripping tap.

‘Take care of the golf balls first –
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’

One of the students raised her hand
And inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.

‘I’m glad ! You asked’.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.’

Please share this with other “Golf Balls”

I just did…….. Best and profound regards!

Sheri….

Trapped in his own body for 23 years – the coma victim who screamed unheard

• Misdiagnosed man’s tale of rebirth thanks to doctor
• Total paralysis masked fully functioning brain.

For 23 years Rom Houben was imprisoned in his own body. He saw his doctors and nurses as they visited him during their daily rounds; he listened to the conversations of his carers; he heard his mother deliver the news to him that his father had died. But he could do nothing. He was unable to communicate with his doctors or family. He could not move his head or weep, he could only listen.

Doctors presumed he was in a vegetative state following a near-fatal car crash in 1983. They believed he could feel nothing and hear nothing. For 23 years.

Then a neurologist, Steven Laureys, who decided to take a radical look at the state of diagnosed coma patients, released him from his torture. Using a state-of-the-art scanning system, Laureys found to his amazement that his brain was functioning almost normally.

“I had dreamed myself away,” said Houben, now 46, whose real “state” was discovered three years ago, according to a report in the German magazine Der Spiegel this week.

Laureys, a neurologist at the University of Liege in Belgium, published a study in BMC Neurology earlier this year saying Houben could be one of many cases of falsely diagnosed comas around the world. He discovered that although Houben was completely paralysed, he was also completely conscious — it was just that he was unable to communicate the fact.

Houben now communicates with one finger and a special touchscreen on his wheelchair – he has developed some movement with the help of intense physiotherapy over the last three years.

He realised when he came round after his accident, which had caused his heart to stop and his brain to be starved of oxygen for several minutes, that his body was paralysed. Although he could hear every word his doctors spoke, he could not communicate with them.

“I screamed, but there was nothing to hear,” he said, via his keyboard.

The Belgian former engineering student, who speaks four languages, said he coped with being effectively trapped in his own body by meditating. He told doctors he had “travelled with my thoughts into the past, or into another existence altogether”. Sometimes, he said, “I was only my consciousness and nothing else”.

The moment it was discovered he was not in a vegetative state, said Houben, was like being born again. “I’ll never forget the day that they discovered me,” he said. “It was my second birth”.

Experts say Laureys’ findings are likely to reopen the debate over when the decision should be made to terminate the lives of those in comas who appear to be unconscious but may have almost fully-functioning brains.

Belgian doctors used an internationally-accepted scale to monitor Houben’s state over the years. Known as the Glasgow Coma Scale, it requires assessment of the eyes, verbal and motor responses. But they failed to assess him correctly and missed signs that his brain was still functioning. Continue Reading…
