In the latest 007 thriller, Quantum of Solace, Daniel Craig continues to explore the depths of the iconic superspy, this time (his second) revealing a man consumed by his job.
It just so happens that his work is saving the world.
“It’s no moral judgment,” Craig says, sitting with his right arm in a sling, the result of 007 action work aggravating an old injury. “If there’s ambiguity to the character, then you’ll have a better time. It’s as simple as that.
“There’s no kind of self-conscious idea to make him a deep, meaningful human being. I just think, well, he’s a spy and kills people for a living. There might be some consequences for him — and everybody around him.”
By now it’s well known that Quantum (opening Nov. 14 in the USA) picks up moments after the conclusion of 2005’s Casino Royale, which rebooted the franchise.
In the sequel, Bond nearly self-destructs in his quest to uncover the Quantum organization behind the money-laundering in the original story. The lines of justice and revenge become so blurred, his own MI6 handlers fear he is too wrapped up in the mission to pull it off.
Even this film’s Bond girl, Camille (Ukrainian-born model Olga Kurylenko), is so devoted to her own quest for vengeance that together they are all business — no time or energy for any between-the-sheets action.
Craig, 40, jokingly compares his Bond’s big flaw — total immersion in his duties — to the e-mail-checking, cellphone-addicted, always-on-call culture of the modern workplace.
“You’re never away from the office. That’s very true of people, isn’t it?” he says. “We’re driven to do that, and maybe that’s wrong. Maybe we should all step back, put it down for an hour a day and be out of the office.”
Craig adds: “That said, it is a Bond movie.” His day job involves high-speed, cliff’s-edge car chases, speedboat escapes and exploding desert hotels.
After six Bonds and 22 films, audiences still dig it. Casino Royale ultimately grossed $594 million worldwide, topping Die Another Day’s $431 million record. Quantum already had a record-breaking debut in Europe, with about $40 million.
With this installment and future ones, Craig’s challenge is to keep the fan base rejuvenated.
Thomas Huffner, who runs the fan website BondMovies.com, says he wants the franchise to continue Bond’s anti-hero qualities. “He’s human, and the more human you make him, the more believable the character and the more successful the movie,” he says. “He’s far from perfect, but that’s what makes him interesting.”

He’s in the Big Apple promoting his new thriller “Twilight,” and yesterday  Robert Pattinson was over at Planet Hollywood, scaring up some publicity.
The “Harry Potter” stud took part in a special hand print ceremony, looking hunky in a grey button-up shirt, black tie, and black knit cap.
During a recent Q&A session, Pattinson admitted that he’d rather see Bella’s character end up with Jacob rather than with his character in the movie Edward.
He told fans, “I’d go with Jacob [for Bella]. Jacob is way more interesting…If you have a girlfriend that’s like Edward…yeah, you’re hot and everything, but just shut up.”

Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix has announced he is quitting his acting career to focus on music.
A spokeswoman for Phoenix, best known for his Oscar-nominated turn as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, confirmed his new film would be his last performance.
“He has said that Two Lovers is his last,” said publicist Susan Patricola.
“But this is not strange. Joaquin has been directing music videos and been involved in music for the last number of years,”she added. The 34-year-old actor, the younger brother of the late River Phoenix, first announced his intention to quit films on the US TV show Extra earlier this week.
However, he abruptly ended the interview after the reporter questioned whether he was joking.
Phoenix came to public attention as the person who called the emergency services when his brother River collapsed from a drug overdose at a Los Angeles nightclub in October 1993.
He rose to fame in the 1995 indie film To Die For, playing an infatuated teenager who is persuaded to kill the husband of an ambitious weather girl - played by Nicole Kidman.
Subsequent films include M Night Shyamalan’s The Village, Quills and Gladiator - for which he received his first Oscar nomination in 2001.
Two Lovers, a romantic drama in which Phoenix stars opposite Gwyneth Paltrow, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Phoenix was unable to attend the premiere after being admitted to hospital with viral gastroenteritis.
The film received its UK debut at the London Film Festival last month. It is expected to go on general release early next year.

The new Bond film has broken box office records on its opening day in the UK taking £4.9m, says studio Sony.
Quantum of Solace, starring Daniel Craig, smashed the previous record for a Friday opening of £4.025m, held by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Princes William and Harry attended the film’s world premiere in London on Wednesday ahead of its general release.
Opening day numbers also surpassed the 2006 Bond film, Casino Royale, which took £2.9m on its first day of release.
However, Casino Royale, which marked Craig’s debut in the Bond role, won almost unanimous acclaim among critics and fans alike.
It went on to becomes the most popular film overall in the UK in 2006, taking more than £50m at the British box office.
