Fawcett died shortly before 9:30 AM PST in a Santa Monica, CA hospital, a spokesperson for the actress said.

Fawcett’s role as one-third of the sexy, martial arts trained trio in Charlie’s Angels launched her into icon status. With the help of her blue eyes, luxurious locks, and million-watt smile, a now infamous poster of the actress in a clingy bathing suit sold in the millions in the late 1970s.

Fawcett sought to separate herself from the bathing-beauty typecast by seeking more serious roles in films through the ’80s and ’90s, and became a critically acclaimed actress. She received three Emmy nominations, six Golden Globe nods, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award as best supporting actress for “The Apostle” (1997).

Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, and underwent treatment soon after with the help and support of actor Ryan O’Neal, her longtime partner and father to son Redmond, born in 1985.

Her battle with cancer, a fight riddled with painful treatments and excruciating setbacks, was documented in the televised special, “Farrah’s Story.” Even as she grew weaker, Fawcett’s resolve to beat her illness, and show her journey to the world, never wavered.

“Cancer is my own private war. The strain, the nausea, the fever take turns challenging my strength, my mind and my spirit,” Fawcett said in the TV documentary. “Even after two years, I still haven’t learned why I can’t will my body to heal itself. I’m still trying, but slightly crying.”

This month, O’Neal stated that he asked Fawcett to marry him, and she had agreed. They planned to wed as soon as she was able. Sadly, they never reached that day
